Growth on the Rocks
In 2019, Brad and longtime local, Nick Polivka, saw a need. Their town was growing fast, housing developments were popping up, schools were being built, and families were putting down roots, but something was missing...

Missing Spirits
One evening, the two were talking and both realized what was missing: the nearest liquor store was a 15-minute drive away. This conversation sparked what would soon become Red Barn Liquor.

A Loan Worth Toasting
As the idea took shape, Brad and Nick began mapping out what it would take to make Red Barn Liquor a reality. They connected with their partners at Cornerstone Bank, who then introduced them to Dakota Business Lending. Through this partnership, they secured an SBA 504 loan, giving them access to long-term, fixed-rate financing that would help lay the groundwork for the building.
“When Nick and Brad were considering building their business in Watford City, Cornerstone was here to help support their vision. It was great working with them throughout the process of getting the store built and ready for operations. Nick and Brad were great to work with and I am very grateful for the opportunity.”

Raising the Barn
This wasn’t a copy-and-paste build. Brad and Nick didn’t just want to open a store, they wanted it to feel like it belonged. So, they raised a barn...literally. From the woodwork to the welcoming layout, they designed Red Barn Liquor to reflect the rural heart of Watford City, built for farmers, ranchers, and oilfield workers alike. Construction delays hit during COVID, but they stuck with it. The doors opened on Christmas Eve of 2020.
“It all came together smoothly...from application to closing. Without the SBA 504 loan and its strong rates and terms, Red Barn Liquor might’ve just stayed an idea. Instead, it’s a real business that now provides jobs in our own community.”

Still Pouring Strong
Brad lives in Denver now. Nick balances other business ventures. But Red Barn still runs strong, thanks to a solid manager and a staff that shows up, digs in, and gets it done. Their work ethic has made the shop a reliable part of the community. Today, Red Barn Liquor employs 10–12 people and continues to be a steady presence in a fast-growing town.
“We’ve had incredible staff over the years—strong managers and a solid team. We’ve also felt a ton of support from the community.”
